The town of Buccino, at ancient times called Volcei, had populations since the VI century BC..Tito Livio notes that the colony of Volcei was re-designed at
the time of the war against Hannibal in 209 BC, when the Hirpini, the Lucanian and Volceienti surrendered to the consul Quinto Fulvio.
In the first century BC, Volcei became Municipium, was ruled by judges called "quattuorviri" and was redesigned with a grid street willing to herringbone, on either side of an
east-west.
As evidenced by an inscription dating to the second century AD, an earthquake of great magnitude marked a new reorganization of the city found in new buildings ranging functions and orientation of preexisting islets.
Shortly after mid-century, 162, Bruttia Crispina, the daughter of a volceian senator, married Lucio Commodo that in the year 180 AD become the new emperor of Rome.
Constantino's additional registration of land registry documents show that in the middle of the fourth century AD, Volcei, despite the deep crisis that
affected the entire Italian peninsula, controlled a developped agricultural territory and lot of settlements.
